BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON FIVE REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON FIVE REVIEW

Welcome back to the Boston United – We came to conquer series. So its been awhile since my last update but I’ve not stopped playing the save I’ve just been so involved with it to actually stop and log it all down so lots to get through and lots of ups and downs to come. So a few things have changed since my last post and firstly you can see my new banner at the top of my blog. That’s been created by FMDesign1 and they create some incredible banners, logos, video intro’s so I highly recommend you check them out. Secondly I have also posted a tactical blog showing you how my long throw set piece has benefited me and others and its had really good feedback so go check that out here too. Third but not least id like to announce I am now blogging on the FMBase page along with some other great FM creators so go check them out after reading my blog right here. Right that’s the intro done, let’s get into the football.

So when we last met I had just won the Skybet league two and im heading into Skybet league one. Again my squad needed a huge increase in player quality so let me show you how I did with three of my top players I recruited

TRANSFERS IN

So lets start with the top three signings I’m hoping can help me in league one.

MAXIMUS TAINO

Using my spurs link I tried to get as many players from them as possible as I can use five loan players in a squad. My midfield needed bulking up and I got this young lad. Great tackling and strong I’m hoping he can keep the ball off my defence.

MARCUS FORSS

Again I’ve gone with youth but I have high hopes for this young chap upfront for me. Finishing and composure along with steady physical stats he will be 50% of my new strike force this season

ANTONY FARLEY

The second half of my strike force and a very good striker on loan from Everton. Dribbling and finishing along with a fast style of play he will be my star player this year

SEASON FIVE SKYBET LEAGUE ONE

Lets get into this. Confidence is high around the team after three promotions and three titles and now we are in a league unknown to the people of Boston. With the season starting extremely early this year on the 30th July 2022 pre season seemed to go very quickly. Before the first game of the season and when my teams transfers have been done I ALWAYS make sure my set pieces are all up to scratch. Making sure the players are where they need to be. Detail is key.

First game of the season is against AFC Wimbledon at home and our young new striker Farley hits the ground running with an early goal and getting the three points we wanted. Great start! Next we head into our first away game and we travel to Southend for what was a difficult game but we get a goal in the first half by Farley again and secure a 1-0 win. Back to back wins to start the campaign. Burton at home next and we struggle to create anything and go down 1-0 but we never were in the game so I can’t complain about that. Bristol City away next in the carabao cup and we get absolutely spanked 3-0 and again we created nothing. Not tinkering with the team yet and remembering we are newly promoted I go again away at Norwich but drop down from my usual positive play and go balanced but this makes no difference as we go down 2-0 and now that’s three games in a row we have failed to make in impact in games. Time for a tinker I think. I change one of my advanced forwards into a complete forward and change one of my central midfielders into a DLP and it came up trumps as we stormed Charlton at home 4-1 and goals felt good after a baron spell. Luton away next but things quickly slip back into old ways and we lose 3-2 to a 95th minute winner, an absolute teeth kicker. Walsall at home we draw 1-1 and Stoke u23s in the Checkatrade complete the month and it’s not been great at all.

On to September and its only a short month. Sticking with what I did for the Charlton game I kept the players roles the same and headed into a kid of grudge match against Hartlepool as they have bene promoted every season with me in the last three seasons. Didn’t start the game well and go down 1-0 till just after the break Burton gets us a goal before we go on to lose yet again 2-1. Bury away followed the same route with a 2-1 lose before we took on Bradford at home and I changed my balanced approach to defensive now. Leaking goals and not creating is becoming a real problem in this team but we do get a 0-0 so at least half the problem has been addressed there. Next up we take on Barnsley and again we lose 1-0 and another blank from my team. Finding it hard to figure out why after years of domination I’ve not had this in my save yet with Boston so we need to change again and I go back to my original positive style and we lose 1-0 again. Becoming the score line of the season already. A poor month with only one point from fifteen. Disappointing.

After what can only be described as a poor start to my league form I got outside advice on my tactics and changed a few things around. Firstly I changed from having two advanced forwards that I’ve had for the past four seasons and now lead the line with a target man and a complete forward. Next I changed the way my team were balanced in the middle of the field and dropped my central midfielder of the three into a DLP(S) and kept a two in the middle of a CM(A) and a BWM(D) to add balance. Moving my wingbacks from an attacking style to a more supportive it gave my wings more balance. All this advice came from my good friend FMCatenaccio who knows his stuff! Back to my save now and we started away at Peterborough but it didn’t start well we again lose 2-1 but we have a goal and secondly I’m noticing a pattern here of my team scoring around the 45-50 minute mark. Checkatrade next and we finally have a win for the first time in nine games and even though it was via a penalty shootout we take the win over Lincoln. Next we have Bristol Rovers in the league and what a game it turned out to be! Defences were not at the races as it turned into an eight goal thriller but we manage to come out 5-3 winners and get back to back wins. Come on!!! Back on the road next and Ipswich take my good mood away with yes you guessed it a 1-0 win!! Messing around with my training I focused purely on chance creation. ball distribution and chance conversion and it seem to work as out next game we win 3-0 away at Crewe before a 4-1 win at home to Gillingham and a 4-0 win away at Coventry! Where did that come from.

What an incredible end to the month we just had and I was looking to take that forward into the next month. Starting the month off is an ‘easy’ game vs Hampton in the FA Cup away and we got off to a great start and ended well too with a 5-2 win and progression into the next round. Another cup competition next and is was Blackpool’s turn to feel my wrath as I take them down 3-0 at home and progress in another cup, the treble is on. Back to league action and Colchester arrived at the community stadium and they are on the end of a hiding and go down 3-0 and confidence is booming. The balls my DLP (Tainio) is playing from deep up to my wingbacks and attacking midfielder is ripping teams apart. Wonderful football. A long trip down to Northampton next and our form continues with a 4-0 win and as you can see below our striker Ogunseri is still here on loan from Forest from last season and doing the work again. Great little player. Bolton next in the league at home and it was a much closer game that we probably should have drawn in the end but scrapped a 2-1 win. Ending the month how we started with a cup game we take on Portsmouth at home and only just win 2-1 AET with a 117th minute goal but we are in the 3rd round and complete a month of wins and nine wins on the bounce since our tactical change.

The festive month is upon us and its Portsmouth again we play but away this time and in the league. Off like a rocket our boys roll over pompy 6-1 with goals coming from midfield(2) and defence(4) is what can only be described as a set piece masterclass! Checkatrade north next and we took on Bury for a nice 2-1 win and progression again in the cup and our eleventh win in a row. Back to league action and playing one of the teams also fighting for a playoff spot we lose 1-0 and dents our hopes of being up there at the end of the season as competition is tight. AFC Wimbledon away now and we are back to winning ways with a 3-1 win and more goals from defence with Conner Johnson getting two but no goals again from my strikers and that’s four in a row now. Back into the training module and I focused again on creating chances and converting them and it worked again as we win 5-1 and my striker finally got a goal. FA Cup to end the month and we go away to Championship Preston but lose 3-1 as I rested my main two strikers for this game and played my kid Burnett but he did get a goal. Not a bad month overall and we are sniffing around the playoffs.

New year and into the final stretch of the season after a long winter. Keeping my kid in the team after getting a goal we play Luton at home and win 2-0 with a goal from Burnett and one from Burton. A revenge match against Burton Albion came next after they beat me 1-0 at home and didn’t let me play football at all so I wanted to see how far my team had progressed over the season. A boring 0-0 is how it ended but we didn’t play bad. Norwich at home next and one of the pre-season favourites for the title sit in mid table and they played like it as well as I go and wallop them 3-1, great result for confidence and goals from all over the team. Charlton away and we get a point on the road before heading to Oldham for a nice 2-1 win on the road in the Checkatrade trophy, cup progression. Next we play Walsall away again and we just miss out on a point and lose 2-1. Ipswich at home finishes the month and what a way to end it! Another 6-1 victory and my second of the season and my players run riot over the tractor men using my long throw and set pieces to absolute pinpoint accuracy.

Starting the month with a Checkatrade game we play Burton at home and the third time we’ve played them this season. After a tight first half we manage to get two quick goals in the second half to secure a 2-0 win and progression again into the next round. Our enemy next as we travel down to Hartlepool and win 2-0 with goals just before and after halftime to dent the spirits of Hartlepool. League action continues and we take on Bury at home and we just win after a late goal in what was an up and down game but get the points after a 3-2 win. Next we are away at Bradford and who again are mid table but are predicted more than that but again our team win 3-1 and are playing some fantastic football. Cup football to break up all the league games that are coming thick and fast and we secure a 85th minute winner at home to Grimsby to secure a 1-0 and passage to the next round of the cup. To finish the month is a top of the table tie as we take on Barnsley at home and get a 1-1 in what was an even game. A month without defeat and what a time to get it. Right in the mix for playoff football.

Training is as it has been with chance creation and conversion with ball distribution and attack patient. Next we take on MK Dons and every game is like a cup final. Way from home is always a tough tie but a 2nd minute goal was all it needed to get past MK. Peterborough at home next and a first half pounding over the posh secure us a 2-1 and get us another huge three points. Bristol rovers away end 2-2 in a game we didn’t look good in but got the point then a home tie relegation threatened Crewe see’s us get a 5-3 win and two penalty’s in the game. Gillingham at home and I couldn’t have asked for more from the lads after this, our strikers were phenomenal with four goals from Farley and a single on three minutes to start the scoring from Ogunseri gets us a 5-1 win and huge confidence going into out next game!

Charlton Athletic – Checkatrade trophy final 26/3/2023. What a game this was. History in the making as Boston enter there first every cup final and face off against fellow league one team Charlton. What a start for Boston as Ogunseri gets us a 6th minute goal before our league journeyman Adarabioyo scores an OG on 21st before making up for the mistake seven minutes later with a goal and the right end, 2-1 Boston after twenty-eight minutes. 39th minute and Ben Reeves pulls the score lever heading into halftime and nerves look like they are all over the pitch today. Halfway through the second half and Charlton take the lead for the first time in the game on the 66th minute with Boston looking for a way back into the game. A change of formation now as it’s a cup final and I go long and press them all over the pitch looking for that goal to take us into ET and Mohamed Elsa a young striker that I hardly use comes off the bench and gets a 90th minute equalizer!!! Scenes!! A boring ET see’s both sides looking tired and penalty’s are on the cards. Back and forth we go scoring and missing before Charlton final miss and gives us the advantage to secure the trophy…….GOAL!!!!

Boston United have won the Checkatrade trophy!!!!

Final month of the season and a win off securing playoffs and close for the title too! Coventry at home and with them struggling I rest one of my strikers and midfielders after a long cup game last time out and I wish I hadn’t! What a game with was and I wasn’t happy at all by this, 6-5 at home to a team currently 19th in the league and also had to rely on two OG’s and an 80th minute winner. It was one of them times on FM where I went into the dressing room and went mental and they all knew I was right! Next up after that terrible game was Colchester away and again we make hard work of the football we are playing. It took a 85th minute winner to get the three points and leaking goals is becoming a problem for me again at such a crucial time of the season. Northampton at home next and another relegation threatened team and we win comfortably 4-0 to ease the nerves in the camp and really take a huge step to automatic promotion from league one. Bolton away and another tough side as they are in the playoffs but we manage to get a 3-3 draw and add another point to our tally. Our favourite team to play came next and a team we smashed 6-1 last time we met but Portsmouth made is work for the point. Final game of the season and it’s not an easy one. Playoff team Mansfield away and we got off to a terrible start with a goal conceded in the first ten minutes of the game and spend the rest of the half defending our own goal!! Make or break for this lads now a massive 45 minutes and left back Ralph smashes in from a long throw to get us back on track and Marcus Forss the kid I mentioned at the very beginning of this blog scores a 76th minute winner!!!! Scenes!!! BOSTON ARE CHAMPIONS!!!!! What an incredible run of wins, draws and hard-fought battles.

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON FOUR REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON FOUR REVIEW

Welcome back everyone. Hope your Christmas and new year celebrations went well. Nice little break but plenty of football manager played over the festive period. So when I left you last we had just won the Vanarama National league making that back to back titles and promotions and now we find ourselves in league two and a professional club. Not going to be an easy season but lets see what we can do shall we.

Lets start with the new players I’ve introduced into the team for my survival in league two. Listed below are the three main players I think will make the difference in my team. Remember I’m coming from being a semi-professional club and I’ve a lot of dead wood still around. Adding quality loans to my side will be key and I manage to ask the board for an affiliate and I chose Spurs. A HUGE pool of potential. I’m still sticking with my 532 formation that has been my tactic for the last three seasons but with a different class of opposition in league two I’ll have to see how this fairs and also now being a professional club I can now really get my teeth into the training module on FM19 and train my players how I want for big games and busy periods. Now the fun begins.

THE PLAYERS

First is a new striker. Goals are going be key in this league with better defenders to contend with so my first signing is Gabriel. Fast and can finish but his composure is a worry for me.

Next we have Gabriel’s partner in crime this season and that’s Kyle McFarlane. Player in the middle of his career but can finish and can run with the ball. Hopefully will strike a good partnership together

Last but not least is a new wingback. The wingback positions have been a huge problem recruiting for as you either have to make one yourself in the youth setup or pay huge money for one. Lucky for me this guy was on a free and believes in the Boston way. Hayden fits the bill for what im looking for with pace, tackling and stamina. Crossing not as high as I would have liked but a lot better than I had in the position.

SEASON FOUR – SKYBET LEAGUE TWO

So my board expectations this season are avoid relegation and that’s it. Forty points are the required points total and the media don’t think I have a chance. I’ve recruited well and managed to sway them into giving me 350/1 odds to win the league but I’m 19th out of 24 teams in the league so relegation is a possibility. First game of the season is at home as it always seems to be and I had an ok pre season but wasn’t the finished article yet. A boring 0-0 kicked off my season but it is one point towards the magic forty. Heading to Yeovil next and McFarlane get his first goal for the club as we pick up another point. Not getting beat in my first two games felt like wins to be honest. Back at the community stadium and the fans have packed Boston’s town and filled my stadia with 7000 fans coming to see me get my first win of the season 2-1 vs Carlisle, Kyle and Gabriel both getting on the score sheet (could this been the partnership I had dreamed of). Mess around game so I rotate my squad for my first Carabao cup game and we are away to Rochdale and manage to secure a 2-0 away in and drop us in the hat for the 2nd round. Lovely stuff and some extra income for the club.

Huge month of games to start the season with ten games in just 31 days. Next we travel to our promotion buddies in Hartlepool but we get our first loss of the season 2-0. Swindon at home we win 3-2 after a battle of wills and a 2-1 loss away at Salford give us eight points after six games. Carabao cup time though and the 1st round I wasn’t interested but this time we draw Leicester City away! Massive game for us financially and to test my squad against much better opposition. Back and fourth this game went with them taking the lead before I equalise and then go 2-1 up at halftime. Leicester come out the blocks like a rocket and It doesn’t take long before they are level and its 2-2 but the drama isn’t over until the whistle goals and in the 90th minute Gabriel smashes in the winner to progress us into the 3rd round of the Carabao cup!! Scenes! With confidence high we play at home next and secure a 3-1 win and played very well but I have tired players after them games. I rotate for the final game of the month and its the Checkatrade trophy so I didn’t really care much for that but the lads put up a fight and we narrowly loose on penalties. Ten games done and what a month too.

Back at it now after that huge win with league football and we start the month with two draws 1-1 and 2-2 but its points. Away to Bury next and we suffer our biggest lose in a long time 4-1 and a real back to earth result in league two, out played in every part of the game I wasn’t happy with that. Tinkering again with the training I pull of a 3-0 win at home to Doncaster after that huge lose and I’m starting to understand the importance of training now as it made a big difference to the way we played. Next is a nice little break from the league football and our 3rd round tie in the Carabao cup vs Premiership Bournemouth away. Not expecting any upsets here to be honest the Leicester game really took it out of my players but I set up my squad the best I can for the battle in front of me but sadly Bournemouth were far to strong and we crash out of the cup 5-1 but our heads high. First time in the competition and we have surpassed the board expectations and made a truck load of Wonga along the way but my players are absolutely knackered and we lose in the league 2-1 away at Grimsby next but still happy with how we played. After seeing all my players really take a hammering I reduce the training this week to give them a rest and boy did that work well for me! A refreshed side hammer Oldham 9-1 yes 9-1 at home and get my biggest win as a manager this save and I’m delighted. What a way to end the month!

Well after that amazing win the players are feeling quite good and I take my tip of reduced training a little (still learning the ropes) and we win comfortably 2-0 away to Port Vale and now I feel like we are no way getting relegated this season. My strikers are really finding their form now and I’m getting goals from midfield and assist galore from my wingbacks. I’ve moved my own goalposts now and I’m aiming for mid table. As we are progressing well in the league I’m deciding to throw my Checkatrade games and rotate my squad as much as I can to give the players a good rest. We are at home to Salford in the next game and to be fair to my kids/fringe players we get a 1-1 draw but sadly loose on penalty’s again but ill take that. So back to league football and I’ve got my first team players back and feeling fresh we take on Newport at home and win 3-1 scoring some lovely goals on the way. Crewe away next and we concede a late goal to finish 2-2 but ill take that we should have left with three though. Notts County at home are wiped out my our attacking flair 3-1 and a McFarlane hat trick and a 3-1 win away at Forest Green finishes the month and give us a six game undefeated streak.

Fa cup time and we have Bradford away in the 1st round this season and even though they are a league above us I’m very hopeful we can progress past them so I set out my strong side and we come away with a 2-1 win and put ourselves in the pot for the 2nd round and solid performance against better opposition. Arsenal u23’s next in the Checkatrade and its rotation time again so the kids and fringe players are back and again they don’t let me down, we get our third draw in the competition and our third penalty loss as well and whilst its a shame to lose we now have a fresh team again for league action. Accrington away and set pieces are the key here with a corner routine and a free kick routine getting the better of a hard defence to break down giving us a 3-2 win. Two 3-1 results against Rochdale at home and Morecambe away gives us six more points and we are now in the mix in this division at the top, exciting times to be a Boston fan. To finish off the month we have the Fa cup tie against fellow league two side Yeovil away but thanks to a hat trick from Meite (a player who has been injured forever) we win 4-2 and are in the 3rd round with the big boys….come on let’s get a trip to Old Trafford!!  Nine undefeated in the league too.

Heading into a month of just pure league two football and we are nine games unbeaten and very confident against anyone we face. First up with month is Crawley at home who get a 1-1 against use despite our dominance throughout the game. Two away games against Stevenage and Cheltenham see us get a 1-0 and 2-0 and boost our playoffs hopes, yes I say playoffs we are really motoring in the league now. Our Fa cup opponents now come to the community ground and get a 0-0 as we played very poor. We finish off the month hosting Hartlepool and get a narrow 1-0 win. Goals are becoming hard to come by at home. We’ve been having the odd cup game here and there and it’s really helped keep my players fresh so fatigue is now becoming an issue.

Back at it with the Fa cup and its our 3rd round tie away at Brentford. A top side in the championship and a strong side all over I decide to throw this game as well as I’m going to get money and I don’t want my players morale to be damaged and as a result the score line isn’t really a surprise as we get thrashed 6-1 but I have a squad at home resting and ready for the league, no matter what side I put out I’m getting a nice little earner. So we are now out of all the cups but have a nice load of money coming into the club (it’s not cheap being professional) so we head off to Carlisle and play the game of the season in a 4-4 slobberknocker before heading to Swindon to draw again 2-2. My strikers are doing there bit but my defenders are letting me down slightly. Training now focusing on defending for a few weeks as scoring hasn’t been an issue and we get revenge on Salford for an earlier season loss and smash them 4-0! Clean sheet and goals, that’s the football I want. A comfortable 3-1 win away at Cambridge thanks to a brace from Robbie Burton secure us three more points and a 0-0 at home to Shrewsbury finish off a busy month and continue our amazing run of nineteen games undefeated in the league.

NINETEEN games unbeaten in the league has put us in an incredible position and playoffs are on the cards. A small month of fixtures only four games as we have no cup football so we start away at Blackpool and looking to extend our run. A tough 2-2 draw but Blackpool nicked there equalizer in the 84th minute. Harsh. Next we have Bury at home and they destroyed us earlier in the season and revenge was on the cards. We tried and tried but we couldn’t break them down and we get a 0-0. Annoying game we threw everything at that one. Doncaster away next and it was a quiet game up until the 72nd minute when Donny went 1-0 up. Ray Haile wasn’t having that and went down the other end and fired in a thunder bastard of a goal to get it to 1-1. Point secured and our unbeaten record intact I thought as the 93rd minute came, 94th minutes, 95th minute…….GOAL! 2-1 Donny they have secured all three points in two minutes extra on extra time! Fuming. Our twenty-one game unbeaten run comes to an end in a horrible way. It goes from bad to worse as we lose our final game of the month 1-0 at home and now suddenly haven’t won in five! Football changes fast.

After losing our streak and now not winning in five games I wanted a response from my team. We take on Oldham who earlier in the season we smashed 9-1 at home and I wanted a goal fest again. We get off to a flyer and score in eight minutes and continued from there securing a 4-2 win and a more total football game. Port Vale next at home and again we stutter in front of our own fans with a 2-1 loss. Frustration now as we are in such a fantastic position in the league and we are slowly throwing it away. Newport away and another goal filled game as we run away 3-0 winners and didn’t really have to work hard for it. Why are we not doing this at home?! A nice milestone to celebrate as its my 200th game in charge of Boston and we are at home to Crewe. Like before we are off the mark quick with a goal within the first ten minutes but we can’t hang on and we concede a sloppy goal in the 70th to drop more points and still continue to struggle at home. Finishing off the month we get a 2-2 draw away at Notts County and again points dropped.

Final month of the season and its going to be a close run thing. Playoff football has been secured even with our poor form but we are still in with a chance of automatic and also the title if we can get some consistency. First game we have is at home and I’ve been so frustrated by our home form of late. Forest Green are the opposition and we are off like a rocket again but two more errors late in the game leads to another 2-1 home defeat. Three huge points dropped with five games to play. Accrington at home next and I have zero confidence in my side at the moment in front of my own crown but two late goals in my favour for a change get us a 2-0 win and we are back on track. Rochdale away isn’t an easy game either and they make us work for the points as another late goal gets us the 1-0 win. Morecambe now coming to Boston and we are scoring and not conceding and it shows as Gabriel smashes in a hat trick in front of the home fans as they chant his name and we are in this now, we are in this title race! Crawley away and we slip up here only managing to get a 2-2 draw thanks to an extra time equalise my McFarlane. Final game of the season and if we win we win the league. If we drop a single point Bury will pounce on this.

We needed characters, we needed leaders. Gabriel Ogunseri is a Boston legend and always will be, a superb hat trick and a Robbie Burton goal secure us not only promotion but secure us the title! BOSTON UNITED WIN THE SKYBET LEAGUE TWO!!! Three titles in a row, three promotions. This team doesn’t know when its beat!

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON THREE REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON THREE REVIEW

CHAMPIONES CHAMPIONES OLE OLE OLE!  The Boston United fans chant after our final game of the season in season two. We are now a VNL team and we have our first trophy of the save. Huge scenes in the small town of Boston and the manager and players are treated like gods but the good times have to turn into preparation at some point and that’s where we start off today. Good day to everyone who has come back to the blog for episode three and thankyou and for everyone else go back and read how we got here! Click here to read. Season oneSeason two

So lets begin with tactics this season. I’ve stuck by my 532 since the first game in change and I’m not going to change that. I love how my wingbacks are causing huge problems for midfielders and crossing balls for fun. They have really become an integral part of my system. Secondly we are no longer in the VNN and we definitely need in improve the talent at the club. The board is happy for us to bravely fight relegation so no major expectations from them but a 80% squad overhaul is needed to survive I think. Lets dive into the team and take a look at the three players I think can really make a difference this season and hopefully fight off the relegation fears.

MEET THE PLAYERS

First up we have Zak Brown. A young talented striker we managed to get on loan from championship side Ipswich. His finishing and pace should really help in this division plus having a good amount of technique I can’t see many better than this man in the league. What a coup for us! On a negative side his poor jumping is a worry as we do rely on crosses from wingbacks. We will have to see.

Next we have Robbie Burton. He is a talented young central midfielder I intend to use as my main attacking threat through the middle. Released by Arsenal we somehow managed to convince him to join us AS LONG as we can make the playoffs in the VNL by 2022/23 season. Passing, off the ball and vision are what attracted me to him and again I’m very excited to see him play for us.

Last but definitely not least and I think my favourite signing we made is George Johnston. A towering young athletic centre back who was released by Liverpool and again we managed to sell him the dream of playing in Boston. No contract promises for this man just pure dedication from him.  I’m looking forward to using him as our main focal point at set pieces as his incredible jumping reach and determination can only result in good things for us.

So that’s my three main players I’ve selected for review. I made a few other signings to bulk out the team and get ready for the new season. Lets get on with the review.

SEASON THREE – VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE

We begin at home to Ebbsfleet on a summer’s afternoon and the stadium is bouncing. Fans chanting the players names and new faces in the ground as our reputation grows. First up we take on the Ebbsfleet. I wasn’t expecting my team to pull up any trees so early in the season but we comfortably win 2-0 and never broke a sweat. One our other summer signings Harry Benn’s scoring both and we have points on the board! 50 points is what the media say we need to achieve to be safe and that’s my first and only goal at this point.  Next we are on the road and face a tough tie against Dag & Red and I’m always nervous going away from home but hard work and a scrappy game see’s us get a 2-1 win with yet again Harry Benn’s getting the winner. Easy this league. Aldershot next at home see’s us get a 0-0 and we didn’t play well at all, lucky not to leak the goals. Stockport at home next the 3rd home game in four so far in the league and we lose 1-2. Our first defeat of the season. Two tricky away game to finish our first month in our new division and we manage to scrape a 3-2 away at Macclesfield and lose 1-0 to Solihull moors. 10 points on the board from our first six games.

September is here and we start on the road again, or 3/4 games in a row on the road. An easy win is predicted against recently promotion Tamworth and we get the win 2-1 with Robbie Burton scoring both. Next up games vs Barrow and Barnet see us get a 0-0 and a huge 4-1 win before a dreadful 3-0 loss to Leyton Orient at home but they are second favourite for the league title. Dover away finishes the month and we grab a 2-0 win and another 10 points this month and gets us 3rd place in the league, 3RD! A positive dressing room after recent results now and the games cannot come fast enough. The team is playing some good football at the moment as we get a 1-1 draw away at Harrogate  before we have six points from six at home with victories against Gateshead and league favourites Hartlepool! Huge win!!!

A nice break in league football I give some of the fringe players a game and rest the stars as we take on FC United in the FA Cup 4th qualifying round and win 4-2 without too much worry but resting my players didn’t help as the next league game we lose 2-1 to Boreham wood after peppering their goal but shot blanks all games. Disappointing to say the least and Wrexham away are going to feel my fury as I wanted answers to that dreadful result against Boreham and they players responded to my aggressive speech with a 4-1 win and a Zak Brown hat trick, lovely stuff. Fylde next and I batter them 4-0 as well. Easy month really with 13 out of 18 points and we continue to smash expectations and sit in 3rd place still.

Moving on to the winter months we start with our game vs Gillingham in the FA Cup 1st round at home and they are a league one side so a no pressure match with some nice money coming into the club as we fill out our stadium again for what could be a huge upset if we get a result. Back and forth back and forth we battled like it was our last game we would play. Goals at both ends as each defence decides to take the after noon off and in a very open game. It all comes down to one moment and that moment was a 77th minute strike by Kian Flanagan to seal a huge scalp in our FA Cup history to get a dramatic 4-3 win! We are into the second round lads!!!

Bouncing after that win and then drawing league one Fleetwood Town away in the FA Cup 2nd round we secure two more wins against Maidstone and Dulwich Hamlet before losing THREE games on the bounce to Torquay, Tranmere and our game vs Fleetwood meaning the FA Cup dream is over for this season. Gutted. With the dream gone we are back at it with league football and back to winning way with a 2-1 win away at Chesterfield, a 1-0 win at home to Billericay and 0-0 draw away at Ebbsfleet. A nice run of results in the league we get a break again but this time in the FA Trophy and a tie against Southport at home and a comfortable 2-1 win drops us into the next round. An incredible 6-2 result vs Dag & Red at home and another hat trick from Zak Brown came next before a match vs Aldershot Town that we had in the bag up until the 65th minute when we decided to make a huge error and gift them an equalizer and then full on fold in the 89th minute and lose 2-1. Keyboards flying all around the place!!! We are creating so many chances a game and so many shots we should be winning every game now and putting games to bed. Remember we are here to ‘bravely fight relegation’ not crash this promotion party of Leyton Orient and Hartlepool.

No tweaks or shouting we go again and win comfortably 3-0 at home to keep real hope of a playoff spot on the cards. Relegation isn’t even muttered around Boston anymore! 1-1, 3-1, 3-2, and 2-1 completed the month of January and also our first undefeated in the VNL and also putting us in an incredible position in the table. One defeat in eleven in all competition’s has given us real hope.

The good times continue with a 3-1 win away at Barnet to keep the race for the playoffs alive but a poor result vs Fylde at home and I say poor I actually mean horrific as it ended 4-1 and we looked limp. After giving the lads the hairdryer I expected a response but it didn’t work as we lose to a playoff rival in Leyton Orient for the second time this season. Fuming!!! I can feel us throwing it away. Again I (cover your ears kids) bollock the lads for a dreadful performance and it finally pays off as we smash Barrow 5-0 at home to blow them cobwebs away. George Johnston and Robbie Burton getting two goals each but that wasn’t the best part! Little did I know how vital them points were…that put is TOP OF THE LEAGUE! For the first time this season we managed to gain top spot in the division. INCREDIBLE! With 12 games to go I am actually thinking about winning this league. A 0-0 draw with Dover soon dampers the mood and see’s us drop into third place but we are in the mix.

Starting off March with a 2-3 defeat didn’t do my title hopes much good and thoughts soon change back to just playoff football which I am still buzzing about. A solid 3-0 win at home to Harrogate keeps me in 2nd before my new bogie team Boreham Wood come and smash me 3-1 in my own backyard! GROWL! Flying keyboards again…..HEADS! Raging after dropping points at home we then have to travel to top of the league Hartlepool where we get a 3-3 draw and that might sound like a good result apart from the fact they scored they 3rd goal in the 96th minute. Arrgghhhh, FM is seeing if I’ve got the minerals for this. Seems they know me well as 0-0 vs Fylde and then 0-0 vs Wrexham keeps me in 3rd position with six games to play. I’m currently four points behind second and five behind top (Hartlepool and Leyton Orient 1,2)

Its crunch month. April. We need a Delia Smith moment in the dressing room to inspire these boys. The final six games are going to make us hero’s or hero’s as we are making the playoffs regardless. How much of a hero is down to these players. Lets see how they got on.

Game one: Maidstone away. A scrappy back and forth draw with neither side able to take the advantage resulting in a 2-2 draw – league position 3rd

Game two: Dulwich Hamlet home. A dominating performance by Zak Brown and Kian Flanagan gets us three points and keeps the pressure on the top two – league position 3rd

Game three: Billericay away. A tight 1-0 win with a goal in the 80th minute by Robbie Burton – league position 3rd

Game four: Torquay home. Another smashing game with George Johnston getting us off the mark in the 8th minute. Zak Brown grabbing two more goals – league position 2nd (Leyton Orient lost)

Game five: Tranmere away. A game against a midtable side turned into one of my toughest and we scrape a 2-1 win with a 92nd minute winner from Conner O’Grady. league position 1st (Hartlepool lost)

Game six: Chesterfield home. Off like a rocket the lads score in the 7th and 9th minute and close that door. Defensive performance of the season – league position 1st CHAMPIONS!!!!

Here is the graph of my league positions throughout this season

BOSTON UNITED WIN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE

What a season this has turned out to be! From being told relegation was a real possibility to winning the title at the first attempt and back to back titles we are now in the Skybet league two next season. The board instantly announce that we are now going full-time and funds will be made available for the promotion winning manager. Onto the end of season awards.

VANARAMA MANAGER OF THE YEAR

VANARAMA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Fantastic achievement by the lads. Amazing work and now Boston hero’s for life. Lets focus on the three players we singled out at the beginning of the season

ZAK BROWN

Brilliant season by our main striker. His goals propelled this team into a force to be feared. Not also unselfish either after adding 13 assist to his season. Would love him back next season.

ROBBIE BURTON

Goals and assist and a constant presents in our team. When we needed a goal he game good. Couldn’t of asked for more from the Vanarama National player of the year

GEORGE JOHNSTON

A solid performance nearly every single game. Average of 7.33 from 28 games. Had one or two injuries but I’m know I’m going to struggle to keep hold of this one. Future star

BOARD UPDATES

So that’s season three over and done. We are now in league two and a professional side. Huge efforts will be needed after back to back promotions. Looking forward to the challenge. Please drop me a follow on twitter @topbinsfm and give all the other achievement hunters blogs a read. Thanks.

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON TWO REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON TWO REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED: WE CAME TO CONQUER

Welcome back to the Boston United: We came to conquer save for football manager 2019.

So after a good start in season one, (read here if you missed it) and narrowly missing out of the playoffs I felt small changes were needed not major overhauls so ill be going through the ins and outs of the club. Tactics will remain the same for the upcoming season as I feel the 532 has real promise on fm19. Wingbacks have not let me down at all. I can’t stress enough how important set pieces are in this years version! So lets sit back, enjoy a beer and lets see how far we got in season two…….

Transfers – ins and outs

Going through the stats of last season we had a relatively good defence but scoring was an issue. I didn’t change from the 5-3-2 formation used in season one just a few personal. First up the outs listed below.

  • Dale Hopkins CM 4.5k
  • Jay Rollins AMC free
  • Jonathan Wafula AMC free
  • Nicky Walker AMC free
  • Paul Brown LM free
  • George Willis GK 2.2k

My main focus was getting the players out that didn’t either feature or contribute to my style. Nothing major as I said about just a small few tweaks.  A few small transfer fee’s as well to boost the coffers.

Now for the ins

  • Jack Bridge CM free
  • Harry Cardwell ST free
  • Joe Healy CM free
  • Tom Warren CM free
  • Travis Johnson WBR loan
  • Noah Chesmain WBL loan
  • Akin Odimayo CB free

Very happy with the calibre of player I managed to bring into the team as most of them are players released by league one/two sides so quality was added. You might also see that I have a new WBR even though we still have player of the year Ben Davies still at the club but he is knocking on 36 so he will be my second choice this season behind Noah.

Season two – VANARAMA NORTH 2018/19

The season began with 10 pre season friendlies to bed my new players in and work on the new set pieces to make sure we are ready to hit the ground running. Some big teams still in the division with Chester and York being tipped to be up there at the end of the season and with the media predicting we finish 4th this season expectation is high! Mixed results from pre season had me a bit worried going into the start of the season but worries were soon gone when we won our first five games of the season scoring ten goals and only conceding three and shoot us to the top of the table. Our next game put us against one of the leagues tougher teams in Tamworth and sadly we lose 2-0 at home but we did manage to win manager of the month

September always seems like a busy month with league and cup fixtures and managing the players fitness is vital. A few small rotations from the starting eleven going into the few games of the month gets us two draws then a slobberknocker of a 3-2 win vs Halifax at home. Jonny Margetts has been smashing the goals in for us hitting seven goals already in the season and helping the team get two more draws and two more wins to finish undefeated in September and keeping us in the top two Excitement is high around Boston! October started the same with a WDWDWW form and the team going thirteen games undefeated scoring lots of goals and progressing in the FA Cup getting a home tie vs League two Mansfield Town at home. Standout players from the month were Harry Cardwell and Joe Healy who can’t miss a penalty scoring three this month!

November stared with out first defeat in thirteen games away at Chester and dropped us down into third. Its super tight at the top with York 1st and now Chester 2nd. Next came our FA Cup tie vs Mansfield and unsurprisingly we lost 3-1 but that wasn’t the most surprising aspect of the game…..they after knocking me out the competition offered me a job interview! The absolute cheek! Fuelled by the defeat next came top of the league York at home and the boys didn’t let me down securing second in the league again with a 2-0 win against a league rival.

Game after game the lads are not letting me down now heading into a busy festive period not losing a single game WWWDW and putting us top of the league. We managed to score seventeen goals and only concede six during this time with standout players being Joe (Penalty hero) Healy and our WBL Noah Chesmain. Scoring for fun is what I want to see and he overlapping wing backs are crossing for fun. Loving it. Heading into January I wanted to continue their current form with goals and points adding up but a poor performance at home to Bradford PA see’s us only just grab a point and we are third again! Annoying we can’t get a grasp of this league and run away with it but we can only beat what’s in front of us. A convincing 4-1 win at home to Braintree thanks to two more penalty’s from Joe Healy keeps us in the mix. Finishing off the month we lose badly to Spennymoor 3-1 right before we have to play a rival in Tamworth! 3-1, 3-1, 3-1 the crowd chant after the Tamworth came as well roll them over and it is definitely a three-horse race at the top of the table.

With fifteen games remaining and having only lost six in all competitions morale is high in the Boston camp, February being no different either with form of WWWWD scoring thirteen goals and conceding five we are now a solid second to York city. Jonathan Smith being the player of the month having scored four goals during the month and helping us gain thirteen points from fifteen. Forward viewing on the fixtures I can see we have a very tough run in at the end of the season with an away game to York and a home game vs Chester so I knew points now were vital if we are to challenge for this title. Playoffs are just about secured but I wanted more, I wanted the title, I want to be a VNN side next season!

Hereford next and we lose a tough battle narrowly 1-0 to end a six game unbeaten run and it isn’t want I had in mind when I clearly stated I wanted points on the board. A team meeting was called by the club captain for morale boosting and it worked a treat as we win our next game 1-0 then smash Guiseley 5-2 away and then win 1-0 again at home. Back in it lads and York drop points too! With six games to go im one point behind York and we have then next….away….1st vs 2nd. Lets to battle!!! And what a battle is was! Top vs second and winning give either York a four point advantage or me a two point advantage with five to play. See below for the final outcome.

BOOOOM! We are top lads, top with five to play! Chester next and they sit 3rd in the league, we are going for it large, sink or swim. Chester at home and we owe they for a defeat earlier in the season. Again not an easy game but after such a fantastic win away top the previous top team confidence is high. It was a tough battle with an own goal by Chester just before half time and then a goal by George Waring just before the hour secured all three points. York not letting up also win leaving it two points between us with four to play. Stalybridge away and FC United at home next and two more W’s on the board. we can’t shake York though they win there next two games as well. Kings Lynn next and they are the bottom side in the division so I have no reason to be worried, right?! I was wrong they battled and dragged me through the mill scoring early and locking the doors until the 75th minute George Waring got us a well-earned point but what about York? they also drop point and draw away to Braintree. Final game, two points the difference. York vs Altrincham away and Boston away to Kidderminster.

Neither side want to let up on the quest for glory.  York take and early lead but we are top on goal difference, Boston struggling to break down this Kidderminster defence but suddenly Akin Odimayo the centre back of all people pops up with a towering header in the 39th minute and we have the league in sight! A tense final 10 minutes see’s York score again but we hang on and yes! CHAMPIONS!

BOSTON UNITED WIN THE VANARAMA NORTH 2019/20

What a season! What a fantastic end to the season. So happy with the players we have, the way we played, losing only SIX times in FOURTY NINE games in all competitions. I cannot fault any one of them. The managers player of the season goes to Jonny Margetts. With his 20 goals this season he has helped the team gain promotion and id also like so special mention our on loan Wing backs Travis and Noel. Between them they got 22 assists, Thanks lads, So after a fantastic season we must move forward. Some players may come with me and some may have to leave. We are a club set out to conquer and even if these players don’t complete the journey they are the foundation builders of the history.

Remember to follow all the other guys playing the achievement hunter challenge and drop them a follow on twitter. Also a side note I won manager of the season. Thanks for the support.

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON ONE REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED – WE CAME TO CONQUER SEASON ONE REVIEW

BOSTON UNITED

WE CAME TO CONQUER

Welcome everyone to my new save and blog of 2018. Our adventure will start at Vanarama north side Boston United as we try to work our way up the leagues and give the fans something to brag about at work on a Monday morning. This year I will be trying to develop a solid tactic using the new and improved system implemented in fm19 that can dominate from the bottom to the top in the English pyramid and give Boston a style of play they can be recognised for. The squad as a whole isn’t in to bad of a state but a few players will need to be brought in to help me in my quest for world domination…….I mean promotion.

So lets begin……..

TACTICS

This year as I said I want to make a tactic that can be known as the ‘Boston’ way in years to come. It’s not been great so far on fm19 this year as I have struggled to make a tactic that I can feel happy with and room to tweak and still be comfortable with. After many tests I have decided on a 532 that can cover the areas I want to hurt the opposition whilst not giving to much of an advantage to them against me. Now these are just words and during the season I hopefully wont regret them. Using a back three I think will help in the lower leagues as most the sides go with two strikers. I will be using wingbacks to open up the space down the flanks and defensive central  midfielders just in front to protect the space left behind them. A central midfielder which may also be changed to a DLP during the game to get that ball up top for my strikers to bang in the goals. So during preseason results went quite well. Goals were scored and conceded but we have a team and we are now ready for the league. Next up the star players in my side.

TOP PLAYERS

We made a few changes this year to the starting eleven at Boston but I just want to focus on the three main players I think can make a difference for us this season. At the end of the season we will do a review on the three players selected below and see how they got on. Step forward our first superstar…..

Danny Amos

A young talented left back on loan from Doncaster has just what I wanted. Obviously I would like a player with a lot better stats.Crossing, pace , off the ball, he has it all and I’m expecting big things from him.

Noel Mbo

An absolute giant of a man! 6’7 and dam can he head and jump as well. Again it is a load signing but I needed to improve on what we had in that area and I’m very happy with him. Going to be a huge focal point for me at set pieces and with his strength and determination I’m really hopeful he will be our main man this year.

Ben Davies

Ok….yes he is 37! Not a load signing he is actually a Boston player from the off and I’m happy he is. Yes his age is an issue and he will probably retire at the end of the season but the players I could get in his position were not as good and he will be my wingback for the season. Not the fastest but deep crosses from this chap will be a big part of his game.

SEASON ONE – VANARAMA NORTH 2018/19

The season beings after a great pre season with a busy seven game month but the players are fit and ready to go and wanting the media speculated playoff spot. Games vs Guiseley and Leamington don’t go as planned as we lose our first two games of the season to poor play and hardly and penetration on the opposition. Tinkering around with my strikers I make my DLP a AF and it seems to have worked. Back to back wins over FC United and Nuneaton show me our side can win games and play well too but never count your chickens as we lose again to two poor penalty decisions after playing well but we can’t account for refs wanting the spot light. Sticking with the same team and formation as we’ve really got a good system going we go six games undefeated which pushed us up to 4th in the table and making it seven games without defeat we win our FA cup 2nd round qualifier vs Nantwich to finish off one hell of a September.

More FA cup qualifiers next and we are in the pot for the first round. Two more home games in the league and we are very lucky to not loss to Blyth and we beat Chesterfield. Sitting in 3rd in the league now and that’s 10 games in all competitions undefeated. Now for some pain and football manager hurt, five games this time we play home and away and we pick up a mere 1 point from 15 and we drop to 8th in the league. In the middle of that we win our FA cup 1st round game to get a tie with MK Dons at home who are sitting top of League two. Annoyed by our currently form I drop my poacher role upfront and have a CF alongside my AF and instant results 12 goals in the next four games from the team and back to winning way but next up we have the big fish and MK Dons coming to town! 2-0 up at half time we are hammering MK and I’m already thinking of a huge payday in the next round….then came the army from MK and two quick goals give them a 2-2 score line at the 60 minute mark. We hang on and gain a replay at stadium MK and get tv coverage as well. One game in-between the fixtures we win 3-1 away at Spennymoor but I’m not thinking about the league I’ve got bigger fish to fry.

WHAT A REPLAY!!!! Below is a screenshot of the score and scorers and I’m so proud of my players for what they managed against players they never should have had a chance with. With 400k in my bank from tv and ticket sales I can’t complain too much. Well done lads.

Back to league football our form and things are still going well with seven games more undefeated since the battle at MK and we are in 4th in the league, playing good football and scoring plenty of goals. An FA Trophy defeat away to Hartlepool see’s us leave that competition quite early so just league football for us now remaining. Three more wins give the team a cushion from teams below outside the playoff zone and we are still cementing 4th. Things take a nasty turn in Boston and our defence has suddenly forgot how to play football! Draw, loss, loss and 1 point from 9 we are in 6th spot and nerves are coming into play here. Back to back wins over Southport (2-1) and Chorley (2-0) keeps me in 5th but im only 5 points inside the playoff zone. Defeat to York and a win to Curzon (2-0) keeps hopes alive with 5 games left to play. The results below are how my season really ended, live the life of a football manager, the ups and downs but just make sure you learn from them.

  • Blyth (A) 3-0 loss
  • Darlington (H) 1-1
  • Brackley (A) 1-1
  • Ashton (H) 3-0 loss
  • Hereford (A) 3-1 loss

And that was that! The final day of the season saw Brackley overtake me and secure 7th spot and drop me to 8th. After some very good spells during the season it just wasn’t enough and Boston are going to be VNN next season. A league table below shows the final positions. What a season. Love football!

PLAYER REVIEWS

Danny Amos – A solid season by our on load left back. Created goals all season whilst looking solid in a back five. Will try sign him on loan again next season or permanently if possible.

Noel Mbo – Our giant of a man didn’t let us down in front of goal with a massive 18 goal return and he is definitely one I want back! Young, strong and will only get better.

Ben Davies – The veteran was one of our most consistent performers this season. Assists, goals and remember he is 37!! Signed a new deal with the club but physical stats in decline. My player of the season.

Overall I as happy with how it all went. Some good runs but some terrible as well. Much to work on but I’m hopeful of added to this crop of players and pushing for the playoffs at a minimum next season.
